Tremulous is a FREE FPS game based on the Quake 3 Engine (Quake 3 is not required)
Website Linkage: http://tremulous.net/
Overview (from site): Tremulous is a free, open source game that blends a team based FPS with elements of an RTS. Players can choose from 2 unique races, aliens and humans. Players on both teams are able to build working structures in-game like an RTS. These structures provide many functions, the most important being spawning. The designated builders must ensure there are spawn structures or other players will not be able to rejoin the game after death. Other structures provide automated base defense (to some degree), healing functions and much more...
Features:
Flexible particle system - 99% of the in-game visual effects are configured using particle scripts.
16 buildable structures with in-game functions.
Play as several alien classes with unique abilities.
Customize your setup as a human and buy new weapons, armour and items.
Scale the walls and ceilings as an alien waiting for an unsuspecting human.
Realistic physics and motion - no bunny hopping or quick back peddling.
Flexible map system - animated mapobjects, triggering, light flares, etc.
Large weapons system - don't like the weapon you have? Sell it and buy a different one, dozens of options.

funny you mention silkroad, theres a list of free MMMORPG's on the fileplanet site and that one was listed in with about 3 other completely free ones...
there are untold trial versions, but free is all the sweeter...
Free games... yum!
I am seriously getting sick of paying $60.00 for a game that should never have left the beta stage, only to have the developer spend more time on their next game than fixing the one they just released.
The developers of free games have a great passion for their games. They try very hard to make it good. They listen to what the community says. They are gamers like us, who are probably sick of all the big companies screwing up so much.
There are a lot of free games out there...

the learning curve on Tremulous was steep but levels out FAST especially since in the progress of one game you can change multiple weapons or lifeforms...
stick with it, I only recommend you dont build anything (or take anything down) until you know what everything does :) jsut stick with other people as a grunt and get the bigest weapon and armour you can :)
